,3.2 AN AFRICAN PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
1. Decolonisation (Education)
Shifting away from the Western concepts and going back to our African roots. It
is a way of reclaiming our ethnicity and uniqueness, which is important for the
youth to understand and take into consideration.
2. African Communication:
This is the way in which rural areas in Africa have been doing things. It is a
certain way of life for Africans and their mindset will not change.
3. Ubuntu (Humanness)
Ubuntu means the connecting of humanity as a whole. Mutual benefits and
independency form between a peer and their community through Ubuntu. Ubuntu
acts as one of the fundamental factors of foundation in education.
4. Africanisation:
The process in which interpretation and the defining of the African culture and
identity takes place. It offers a sense of belonging through cultural familiarity in
the classroom.
5. Indigenous Knowledge (IKS)
Knowledge passed down throughout the years to each generation, almost like
myths, traditions, folktales, etc.
4.1.2 MY TEACHING PERSPECTIVE
1. What does teaching mean to you?
Teaching means making a difference in a child’s life. Teaching allows children/learners
to pursue their dreams and work towards their goals. Teaching is also a way of
supporting a learner through their schooling journey/career.
2. How would you best describe teaching and what it involves?
Teaching is the art/science of assisting or helping others to gain knowledge and
understanding. It involves supporting the learner, as well as training them to develop
certain skills through practice.
,3. How do you see your role as a teacher?
My role as a teacher is to guide the learners accordingly. It is also my responsibility to
always make sure that they are on the right track regarding their work, as well as the
way they think. The role of a teacher is also to provide the learners with knowledge and
expand their own knowledge.
4. What is your understanding of learning?
My understanding of learning is grasping information and using the information to make
connections between what you knew to what you know now. One will start to
understand and look at things differently or from a different point of view.
5. What do you expect to learn or gain from this process of observation and
teaching practice?
I expect to gain some teaching methods and different approaches one can use in the
classroom. I also expect to gain knowledge on how to treat children and understand
their way of thinking.
4.1.3 MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY (BELIEFS)
a. Why you want to be a teacher.
I appreciate the idea of seeing children develop over time, as well as gain confidence in
their work and themselves. It is rewarding knowing that one can make a good impact on
another’s life.
b. What subject and age group would you like to teach and why.
I would prefer teaching Grade 5 and the subject Mathematics. I feel that they are at an
age where they are maturing. I would also like to teach Maths as it allows one to think
and come up with solutions.
c. How you believe teaching should take place.
I believe that teaching should take place in a calm and quiet environment. There should
be minimum distractions.
d. How you believe learners learn best.
Learner’s learn best by trying the work out on their own first, then doing corrections to
see where they had went wrong.

Teaching paves the way for ones career at a very young age.
f. How you believe you can make a difference.
I can make a difference by being a good support system for the learners. I can help
them gain confidence and build their self-esteem.
g. What learning gains you are expecting to achieve during your teaching
practice.
I am expecting to gain confidence in the classroom. I am also expecting to pick up
teaching methods and strategies.
4.1.4 TEACHING PHILOSOPHY IN CONTEXT
4.1.4.1 Introduction
• A Feeding Scheme – The school has a feeding scheme project which was
implemented a few years back for the kids who come to school with no lunch.

1. Situated learning (incident in the school or classroom): Learners did not
grasp the Afrikaans being taught.
2. Constructivism (what you remember and what you learnt from the
incident): Start from the basics. Translate from Afrikaans to English regularly.
Go at a steady pace as the teacher was quite fast.
