Childhood obesity is a complex and preventable disease that occurs whena childiswell above thenormalorhealthyweightforhis orher age and height. Per the CDC website, children that fall within the rangeof 85th to 95th percentile are considered overweight, and those over the95th percentile are obese. (CDC, 2021). Obesity in childhood can harm the body in numerous ways. Physically, the consequences can include increased risk for cardiovascular disease,diabetes, respiratory illnesses, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease, and gastro-esophageal reflux disease. Childhood obesity is also linked to psychological issues, such as anxiety and depression, low self-esteem, and social problems, such as bullying and reproach. B1. Health Inequity or Disparity Per the CDC website, the percentage of children and adolescents affected by obesity has reached epidemic proportions in our country, more than tripling since the 1970s. In 2017–2018, an estimated 19.3% of US children and adolescents aged 2 to19 yearssuffered from obesity. On a more local level, 18% of youth in the WGU Task 1 C229 state of Georgia ages 10-17 are obese, ranking Georgia number 14 inthe country. (State of Childhood Obesity, 2022). Dodge County, Georgia is located in the south central part of the state and is home to approximately 20,829 residents. Dodge County residents consist primarily of 18–64 year old, non-Hispanic white people. 19.2% of the population are <18 years old and 18.6% are >65years old. 66.9% of residents are white, with black residents coming in second at 30.5%. The remainder of the population is made up of Hispanics, Indian/Natives, Asians, and residents with two or more races. Percentages for obesity among both males and females in Dodge County rank higher than state and national percentages. (, 2016).
