Preventing Teen Suicide in Ohio
Across the United States, teens are committing suicide at alarming rates. Atop mandatory
mental health training for school personnel, legislators have proposed a bill to maximize access
to mental health treatment for elementary and secondary school students.
Overview and Severity: The Teen Suicide Epidemic in Ohio
The teen suicide crisis is a nationwide public health concern affecting Northeast Ohio
disproportionately. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide
is the third leading cause of death among individuals between 15 and 19 years old, surpassed
only by accidents (Murphy, Xu, Kochanek, Curtin, & Arias, 2017). A youth risk behavior survey
conducted by the CDC revealed that 17.7% of American high school students had seriously
considered suicide, 82.4% of those making plans to attempt suicide, 8.6% of American high
school students having actually attempted suicide in the 12-month period preceding the survey
(“United States 2015 Results”, 2017). While Ohio’s percentages were each lower than the
nation as a whole, the Cleveland Metropolitan School District actually had the highest
percentages of any surveyed school district. 20.7% of Cleveland high school students had
attempted suicide during the 12 months leading up to the survey (“Cleveland, OH 2015 Results”,
2017).

over-year since 2009, evidence that existing efforts to prevent suicidal ideation, planning, and
general behavior have failed (“Trends”, 2017). The annual adjusted suicide rate in the United
States is 13.42 suicides per 100,000 individuals (“Suicide Statistics”, 2017). Among teens aged
15 to 19, suicide is more prevalent by a factor of 3.6, 48.3 of every 100,000 adolescents
committing suicide in a given year. While nationwide efforts are desired, the urgency of teen
