Part 1: The psychological terms you need to describe are ‘Binet–Simon test’ and
‘normal distribution’.
The Binet-Simon test was created to evaluate individual variation in intelligence, which was
completed in 1911. The test itself, helps identify children with special needs. The test
includes 54 tasks such as counting pennies, the test would assess different types of
intelligence. The test would vary depending on age. For example, it created the concept of
test norms, and allowed help for those who are special needs, and their area of weaknesses.
(University, 2014, pp. 20-23) A child aged 4 had the same result as a 2-year-old this would
indicate development delay (Richardson, 1998).
Normal distribution is the notion that human characteristics differs between people, like
height, but also intelligence scale, will be dispersed in a population, this will be distributed by
example, gender. An example is the average shoe size for a male, is size 9. It can be
expected that many males will require a shoe size around that size. How ever a size 6, or
size 12 is consider small, or large and therefore is rare. This means that the intelligence
scores are likely average, it is rare that it is high, or low. (University, 2014, pp. 28-29)
