The title of the book is Emmy & Oliver, Emmy and Oliver are the main characters in the
book. So the title relate to the main characters because they are the main characters.
Emmy and Oliver were inseparable but then Olivier and his father suddenly disappear.
2 Characterization: What kind of person is/are the main character/s? In what ways
does that become clear to you as a reader? Explain with examples from the book.
Emmy is seventeen years old. She is a spontaneous girl. You notice that in her
spontaneous actions. For example, she lost her friend Oliver ten years ago but when
Oliver has been found and she sees him in the car, she sticks her tongue out at him. Then
Oliver smiled. She talks to him in the hallway like Oliver never disappeared. Emmy loves
surfing, but her parents don’t know. Its difficult for Oliver to get used to his new home
and school. His mother remarried and got 2 more children. Oliver was taught by his
father, so he ended up in a lower class than Emmy.
3 Who is your favourite character in the book and why? Explain with details of what
he/she is saying / doing in the book.
Emmy is my favorite character because she helps Olivier to get used to his new life. At
one point she abandons Caro but she makes up for it in the end. Although her life has
changed a lot now that Oliver is back does she handle well.
4 Development: In what ways does the main character change or develop during the
story? How do you notice that as a reader? Give detailed examples from the book.
At the beginning of the book Emmy keeps the secret she surfs. But when the high school
had an open house, the guidance counselor congratulated Emmy her parents on Emmy
her acceptance to the University of California, San Diego. But Emmy her parents didn’t
know that she signed up for the school. Because she didn't dare to tell me that she
wanted to join the surf team. Her parents were very mad because Emmy actually would
go to community college for two years and then work and live there. And the go to
school somewhere, then Emmy told everything. So she finally told the truth to her
parents. She decides to go to San Diego, and gets a relationship with Oliver. Emmy is
getting closer with Oliver.
5 Conflict: What is the most important emotional conflict that the main character
becomes involved in? How does the writer end the conflict? Explain.
The moment she tells her parents about surfing, she also has a fight with her best friend
Caro.
6 Ending: Is there an open or closed ending to the book? How did that make you feel as
a reader?
There is an closed ending, because Emmy leaves the town to follow her dream. But
