Editorial
“Your emotions
mislead separating
real and fake”
Times change and so does the way news is
brought to people. Thanks to the internet,
articles can now be shared more easily, but this
also brings disadvantages that generations of
today notice: Fake news. As a result, they enter a
crisis where they can no longer distinguish real
and fake and they use their emotions to
determine this.
But to what extent do they use reason over
emotion and how do they determine whether an
article is real or fake?

According to Cameron Martel, there are several
studies that have shown that when people use
emotions when reading an article, they rate fake news
as more accurate. Besides, reason is positively
associated with belief in real news, but not in belief in
fake news. Therefore, people that use reason over
emotion when reading a news article, are less likely to
fall for fake news.

Martel and his fellow researchers also talk in their own
research that more and more people are using
emotions over reasoning when reading an article
about a topic that they feel emotionally attracted to or
do not want it to be false information. However, when
people do not have a strong connection with a topic,
they are more likely to use their reason over their
emotions. Furthermore, more rational thinking is
used when people read about something they read
about before.

Of course this is something that has to change.
Believing fake news can cause problems for society
that can easily be stopped when people do not
immediately believe an article. Checking the source
can be an easy step to take to decide if the article is
real of fake. Other good steps to take are to look at
what other sources tell about the topic discussed or

examine the evidence.
