1. Summarize the story in a minimum of 10 sentences. Share specific
information, proving that you have actually read the story.
The book is about a girl named Lily. She has just moved and is ready to start her life
after college. Then she meets a guy named Ryle and she falls for him. While
developing feelings for Ryle, Atlas, her first love, reappears and that challenges the
relationship between Ryle and her. The book wasn’t just about love. It also dealt with
family cycles, abuse and forgiveness. And also the choices that someone makes in a
certain situation. I think the book is most of all about Lily’s choices. And the influence
some people or feelings have on her.
2. Read an excerpt out loud. Say why you have chosen this excerpt.
p.138
I chose this excerpt, because the letters that Lily wrote for Ellen DeGeneres play an
important role in the story.
3. Prepare to answer these questions:
1) Which character did you like the most / the least?
I like Lily and Atlas the most. And I dislike Ryle the most, because he abused Lily.
2) What changes does a main character go through?
Lily didn’t have an easy childhood, she fell in love with Atlas, but that didn’t work
out. Then she went through an abusive relationship with Ryle. And in the end she
ends up with Atlas again.
3) Describe one significant episode.
p.184
One significant episode is when Ryle hurt Lily for the first time. Ryle had been
drinking and Lily was cooking a casserole. Ryle pulled the casserole out of the
oven without using a pot holder. Lily thought it was funny and she laughed. But
then Ryle slammed his arm against her and she had her face on one of the
cabinet door handles as she came down.
4) What would you say to persuade a friend to read the book.
I would say that the book is really good and that it isn’t just a love story about
choosing oneself over someone they love deeply, but also about Lily’s growth and
the choices people make in certain situations.
5) What do you think of the ending of the book?
I think the ending of the book is really good, because Lily is in a healthy
relationship with Atlas.
6) Were there any moments where you disagreed with the choices of any of the
characters? What would you have done differently?
If I was Lily, I would break up with Ryle the first moment he abused her, instead
of forgiving him. Even though I don’t really know if I would do that in real life.
7) Describe something you liked / disliked about the book.
I liked the short chapters, because it reads faster and I also liked the writing style,
because it was easy to read and because there were a few quotes in it.
