Chapter one
Chapter one introduces the research team and will explain the problems
that the design factory is experiencing at the moment. There are
momentarily four main problems within the Design factory.
The first problem is about the management philosophy of the design
factory. The factory only focusses on their financial goals and to have
better numbers compared to last year. There are no indicators used for a
good goal. Furthermore, the directors of the company are not decisive
enough and that will lead to a poor performance of the co-workers within
the company.
The second problem is that there is no clear mission statement given for
the workers within the company and because of this the workers are going
to question themselves what they are doing within the company. A
solution for this will be explained later.
The third problem is about the value statement. Van der Wall is known to
work fair and that the shoes they are creating are of high quality. But the
co-workers within the company are sometimes not satisfied with their
limited choices. They can’t share their opinion when there is a congress
and the board of directors will take actions without asking the co-workers.
The last problem is that they are dealing with competitors. The
competitors do are mostly from countries which give low-wage to their co-
workers which can lead to cheaper shoes compared to the Design factory.
Chapter two
Chapter two focusses on how to be future-proof. And which models will
help to ensure that the Design factory will meet the conditions of being
future-proof according to research and companies who are already future-
proof. There are four conditions which need to be achieved to be future
proof:
1. ambition
2. good flow of information
3. a clear separation of functions
4. all employees need to have a good insight about the results that are
achievable
based on the problems that the Design factory. There are four models
chosen to meet up the conditions of being future-proof. The models that
have been chosen are:
2
, 1. the SWOT-analysis
2. the balanced scorecard
3. leadership
4. the information flow must be free for everyone within the company
they will be explained in chapter three.
Chapter three
Chapter three will explain the four models that will help the Design factory
to become future-proof.
Swot analysis
the swot-analysis is strategic planning to identify the strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities and threats of a company. The strengths of the
company are: loyal customers, broad network and the experience and
knowledge of their employees. The weaknesses are: the lack of structure
within the company and their outdated employees. Their opportunities
are: the possibility of becoming future-proof and e-commerce. Their
threats are: competition from low-wage countries, online competition and
the lack of will to change from the employees.
The balanced scorecard
The balanced scorecard consist of: the financial perspective, the internal
process perspective, the lean& grow perspective and the customer
perspective. The financial perspective has shown that the company has
not set any useful objectives to reach and they don’t update important
data to the database. Because of this, there is a lack of information about
their financial needs.
The internal process perspective has shown that the company lacks
structure. Because there is no structure, the functions are getting mixed
and there is no way of seeing who is the leader and who the employees
need to listen to. There is a need for a clear separation of functions. If they
maintain some management styles like the administrator and an
organizer, then it is possible for the employees to have clear sight of who
they need to listen to per department.
The lean & grow perspective has shown that there is no improvement and
innovation within the company. They also need to encourage their
employees to take the initiative.
The customer perspective has shown that there is a need to differentiate
themselves more so it is possible for the customer to see why their
product is better than from the competitor.
leadership
It has been shown that not every department has a manager and it is also
unclear what to total amount of employees per department are. This is a
very important point to watch out for in case of the Design factory
because they need to make a clear what the hierarchical relationships are
so that everyone know who to listen to.
the information flow
3
, To optimize the flow of information within the company. There is a
possibility of using the online system called Embrace. With Embrace it is
possible to make sure that the information within the company is
transparent for the executive board and the employees in each
department. This can strengthen the structure of the company and having
a clear separation of functions within the company.
Chapter Four
In chapter four we explain through the conclusions and what advice we have for The Design
Factory. It is currently inflexible because it has a bad competitive ranking, they are not
determining useful objectives. Therefore the management can't make proper decisions. And
lastly the production process is not quite optimal.
We advise the Design Factory to go easy on bureaucracy, because both the management and
the employees need to be more independent. If the decisions are made within the
departments the improvement of both efficiency and effectiveness will change drastically for
the better. To make sure the company won't face any problems in the near future is to know
when to let employees go. Perhaps pension of some sort. It is important that the employees
know where they are at that moment. This can change if certain courses are given.
We also advice the Design Factory to strengthen their quality in their brands. This can be
achieved if there are some sorts of promotions such as an advertisement.
To know which of the suppliers are better for the company, we advise them to analyze which
supplier is the most profitable. This will affect the result of the inventory cost for the
company.
And through signing a new contract with the most profitable supplier, in which the supplier
will always agree to deliver on time.
To optimize the information flow, we recommend to start using an online platform called
Embrace. Embrace makes it possible to have transparency for both the executive board and
the employees.
To attack the problems with the production process, we advise to use a better form of
distribution for the department management. Our recommendation is that there needs to
be two managers for the two shoes which are being produced. This makes it possible for the
employees of both departments to see who has the authority and also reduce
disagreements, which will lead to efficiency of the employees.
Our last recommendation is to startup an online store for short term. The cost of the design
factory can be reduced with the use of E-commerce, since customers worldwide have the
ability to access the internet. In addition to opening an online store, we advise to collaborate
with another company to strengthen the image of their shoes and their competitive position.
