PROJECT REPORT SUMMARY ASSIGNMENT 1: CRITICAL
STATE SOIL MECHANICS
MASSŸN VERNON HARMSE
Supervisor: Professor Heymann
Department: Civil Engineering
University: University of Pretoria
Module: SGS 788 Theoretical Soil Mechanics
This report contains the author’s response to various questions posed by Prof Heymann for
the purpose of this assignment. Any assumptions made and calculations used during the
completion of the assignment are also contained in this report.
The aim of the assignment is to allow the author to apply critical state soil mechanics theory
and then utilize the results to draw conclusions about the tested sample. The assignment
process will equip the author with a better understanding of the critical state soil mechanics
and allow the author to better understand and interpret the results from a triaxial test. This
report contains the following:
• Calculation and presentation of the effective stress paths in p’ vs. q’ space and p’ vs. ʋ
space.
• Determination of critical state parameters.
• Making use of first principles to obtain the stress state and/or excess pore pressure of the
soil in undrained and drained tests.
• Making use of the Cam Clay model to calculate and plot the state boundary surface and
state path in undrained and drained tests.
• Calculating shear- and volume strains for undrained and drained triaxial tests in undrained
and drained tests.
