, INTRODUCTION

Media is a very crucial element in life because it enables communication and sharing
of information and also media acts as a watchdog towards ranking officials. The essay
below is going to discuss on various aspects of media including freedom of expression,
the palma terrorist attack, the concept of gatekeeping and various other aspects to be
presented in the essay below.

2.1 Write a critical discussion in which you explain how freedom of expression,
democracy and the media intersect.

Freedom of expression, democracy and the media.

Freedom of expression obviously depends on views of the media's perceived role or
roles in society. In other words, it is concerned with the function or perceived functions
of media in society and ultimately comments on the effects and power of media in
society and on people. For example, one who believes that the media is more powerful
and believes that the media can have a strong influence on people's behavior, the
more governments try to control and abuse the media for their own purposes, including
proliferation. their political ideologies (Fourie 2002).

The “Fourth Estate”

The “Fourth Estate” describes the role of journalists in representing the interests of
“the people” in relation to the business and political elites who claim to do things in our
names. The idea that the news media is the fourth estate has a checkered history. It
began life as a term of abuse for silly and principled writers in the press gallery of the
Palace of Westminster. Conservative Anglo-Irish MP Edmund Burke coined the
phrase as a way of mocking gentlemen of the press. In the intervening centuries,
however, the Fourth Estate meant taking a principled stand to – as Australian
Democratic Senator Don Chip put it – “keep the bastards honest”. It is with this
framework in mind that the news media should approach any news arising from the
Snowden materials and their careful assessment of the revelations, allegations or
speculations they contain. (Fourie 2002)

The main theories which influence the South African thinking about the role and
functioning of the media.
