In this piece of work I will explain the legal requirements of a business and
the policies and procedures that are agreed upon. My chosen business is
Havering Sixth Form College. I will identify what laws are applicable to this
business and how HSFC needs to manage staff to ensure that they stay
within the law. This leaflet will also explain how business ethics and
business continuance plans are vital components to any given business.
Data Protection Act 1998
The Data Protection Act 1998 protects people from having information
stored away about them. People are allowed access to any files that are
about them. The information firms have on you must be treated fairly and
inside the law. When you’re buying online, the business you just bought
from cannot give away your details to anyone else unless you agreed to.
Havering Sixth Form College has to make sure that all information stored
on its staff and students is kept safe and is not shared with third parties.
Information which the college would have on students and staff would be
contact information, address of resident, email dresses and pictures of the
students and staff.
Health and Safety Act 1974
The Health and Safety Act 1974 ensures that employers must provide a
safe premises and equipment for employees so that their safety is not at
risk while at work. This means that workers health will not be affected by
their work. Regarding to Havering Sixth Form College staff need to be
aware of all the health and safety rules around the college and need to
also be made aware of any hazards within the work place. If HSFC does
not follow this law and the safety of anyone involved around HSFC is at
risk then HSFC could be sued. To make sure that they are complying with
the Health and Safety Act 1974 they have to make sure that everyone
around the college is made aware of health and safety risks. Signs are put
into place to make people aware of risks such as a wet floor sign, fire exits
and many other signs for other hazards. These are mandatory and have to
be put into place otherwise the college could get into trouble for not
following the Health and Safety Act 1974.
Equality Act 2010
This act protects people from being discriminated against in a work place.
All different kinds of discriminations come under this act such as
discriminating against someone’s gender, race, religious beliefs, sexuality
etc. This is the reason why the Equality Act 2010 was put into place to
stop employers from discriminating against employees and possible new
employees. At Havering Sixth Form College students and staff should not
be discriminated against, for example a student should not be rejected a
place at the college just because of their religious beliefs. The principle
has laid out rules and consequences in case discrimination is found to be
occurring in the college. The people who run the college have to make
