The integument of many invertebrates is a simple
epidermis (epithelium) resting on a basement
membrane and connective tissue. Cilia and glands
may be present or not.
Skin or Integument: the outermost protective layer. Prevents water loss and invasion of
foreign micro-organisms and viruses. Composed of three layers. Epidermis: the outer,
thinner layer; basal cells continually undergo mitosis; waterproof because the protein
keratin. Dermis: of fibrous connective tissue; includes many structures such as sweat
glands, hair follicles and oil glands. Subcutaneous layer: of loose connective and adipose
tissues serving primarily for insulation; nerve cells, arteries and veins run through this
region.
