Types of punishment:
• Execution (the death penalty)
• Torture
• Amputation
• Corporal Punishment

The death penalty has been used for thousands of years.

• Individualisation: the individual is solely responsible for their actions and therefore
oiled benefit from rehabilitation and instead should be removed from society.
• Deterrence: to stop the behaviour
• Retribution: revenge :)

Different forms of death penalty:
• Boiled to death - boiling oil, water or wax.
• The blood eagle - hack back open and remove muscles
• Impalement - NOT NICE!
• Keelhauling - dragging someone through the water on the back of a boat (mostly used
by french / Dutch sailors and also used in Greece)
• The Roman candle - emperor Nero’s favourite - victims tied to stake and set on fire (e.g
guy forks)
• Hanged, drawn & quartered - hanged, chopped into 4 pieces and dragged by horses
(used in the 13th century and order 500 years)
• Rat torture: death by rats.
• Skinning: earliest record 911bc
• Scaphism: trapped between 2 boats, covered in milk and honey. Constantly fed so you
don’t die of hunger but left to be eaten alive by bugs and vermin.
Also:
• Death by a thousand cuts
• Sawing
• Crucifixion
• Brazen bull
• The Catherine wheel

5 reasons for incarceration :
1. Rehabilitation - help /therapy
2. Retribution - for the victim to be supported
3. Restoration - putting things right i.e fines
4. Deterrence - stopping the offender
5. Incapacitation - taking away freedoms

The bloody code - 17th - 19th century England imposed the death penalty for 200+ (often
petty) offences.
