EXPERIMENT 7
Static equilibrium of rigid Body

Jeff Chery

Date: March 15, 2017

Purpose:
The purpose of this experiment is to verify the conditions for static
equilibrium of a rigid body and understand how to measure torque.
Theory:
The theory behind this experiment is that there are certain conditions
under which equilibrium occurs; one of them is if the sum of all the forces is
equal to 0 and the other is that the sum of all torque is equal to 0. We can
measure torque by multiplying the force of the moment arm by r*sin(angle)
which is really equal to the distance of the lever arm. Torque and magnitude
were calculated for this lab. To calculate the torque, we used the formula: T
= r x F where: r = vector related to origin and F = force acting on object (N)
To calculate the magnitude we used the formula: T = F(rsinӨ) = FL
where: L = lever arm, the perpendicular force from the center to a
designated force
When the sum of the forces was equal to zero or the sum of the torques is
equal to zero, equilibrium was reached. (m)

, Procedure:

1) Make sure the force table was set up properly.

2) Place 1 onion skin paper on top of the plate. So that the hole goes in the
center.

3) Look at the figure and place peg1 and peg 2 in the appropriate place.

4) Place the cords over peg1 and peg2 and over the pulleys.

5) Set the angles appropriately.

6) Place the weights on accordingly.

7) Mark the spots on the paper where the forces are applied as well as point
‘O’.

8) Repeat steps for tables 2 & 3.
