Introduction
Workplace Health and Safety Act. This is the law
that regulates the workplace in all aspects and
regions. It is critical to seek up the most recent
version of this legislation while studying or
applying it, as sections of it are frequently
modified to match current requirements.
In the workplace, there are several regulations
and laws that must be followed. The Health and
Safety Executive is responsible for some of these
(HSE). Their goal is to avoid death, injury, and illness among employees and others who are
harmed by their actions.
A health and safety policy are required for companies with more than five employees. This
document, which outlines the overall strategy, aims, and administration of health and safety
in the workplace, is overseen by the HSE. The HSE does this by conducting inspections to
verify that the workplace is safe.

Differences between risks and hazards
Manufacturing processes always have some dangers, as well as the risks that come with
them. To ensure that the dangers to yourself and others around you are minimised, it is
important to grasp the proper health and safety regulations. An example of these
regulations in the workplace is Health and Safety at Work Act, this principal act of health
and safety legislation that describes the duty of all employers and employees to operate in a
safe and controlled way. You must know how to avoid accidents and injuries, as well as what
to do in case of an accident. Organisations will have their own rules in place to guarantee
that they follow a variety of laws. At the end of the day, we are all accountable for our own
health and safety, if we obey the law and business protocols. A hazard is something that
could cause harm, and risk is the potential for harm and the likelihood of it occurring.
Potassium Dichromate is a very hazardous carcinogenic chemical that is an example of this.
It is utilised in certain ways to check for alcohol in exhaled breath. It is kept in a tube for this
reason and is never exposed to the air. As a result, although being an extremely dangerous
chemical, it poses a minimal risk in this application.
It is an employer's responsibility to protect their employees' health, safety, and welfare and
of those who may be affected by their business. Employers must do all in their power to
achieve this. This entails ensuring that workers and others are safe from harm, as well as
properly controlling any risks of injury or illness that may develop in the workplace.
Employers are required by health and safety law to analyse workplace risks. Risk
assessments should be conducted to cover all potential hazards in the workplace.
Even if the process is taken place on a regular basis, a risk assessment is completed to verify
that the process is safe for the person doing it. The risk assessment must also consider the

level of skill and experience of the individual doing the activity. The risk assessment will
cover all potential dangers within the activity, with the aim of lowering risks.
An appointed person or team will oversee monitoring health and safety in a company. They
will make certain that everyone is up to date on the newest legislation and follows all
essential processes. They will make sure that safety equipment is on hand. Personal
protective equipment (PPE) is equipment that protects users from health and safety
hazards. Safety eyewear, safety clothing, face shields, and helmets were some of them.
Fume cupboards and laminar flow cabinets are examples of other equipment.
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations it regulates the use of hazardous
substances (COSHH). All dangerous chemicals must be properly labelled, according to one
section of the law. Chemical tankers have big markings on the side that describe the
material being transported and the methods for dealing with it in case of an accident or
leakage. The laboratory technician will apply the right labels to these chemical compounds
when they are moved to smaller containers for laboratory usage.
An example of hazard symbols:

Hazard What does it mean?
Flammable This means the substance can catch fire if it was with contact
with flame or heated.

Corrosive This can cause irritants or burns to the skin or eyes.

Acute toxic This can cause a life-harm or danger, even if it was in tiny
amounts.

Explosive This can cause a danger to the person or people within the
lab if working with explosive substances.

Hazardous to
the This can cause harm to the environment for example it may
environment kills animals and sea animals.
