Activity 1: Timetable
List two advantages of a school timetable.
1) It allows both learners and teachers to know the exact time and duration of each class period
2) It ensures that all subjects are equally studied and that there is order in the school
Is the school timetable at the school you are visiting functional?
Yes
Give two reasons for your answer.
1) Learners know what subject teacher is supposed to attend them, as a result they take out
books of that subject before the teacher even comes in class.
2) Order is maintained in the school yard as the teachers are the ones changing classes. No
learners are seen roaming around the school premises during school hours.
Briefly explain a problem you experienced with class timetable.
At times the work planned is a lot that it cannot be covered within the allocated class time.
Is there a homework and extra-curricular timetable in the class you observed?
Yes.
Give three specific characteristics of such time table.
Extra-curricular time table
Learners that do participate in extracurricular activities appear to be more confident and
have self-esteem.
Learners find it easy to socialize and build relationships with others.
Learners learn to get work done in a given period, which means they can manage time well.
Homework timetable
Helps learner to develop ability to work alone and to self-motivate.
Help learner to discover things on their own.
Get to a habit of reading.
ACTIVITY 2: Attendance Register
, You have to keep the attendance register of a class for a week and provide the following
particulars
Number of learners: 48 Grade: 4
Age: from: 10 years to: 12 years
Number: 28 (boys) 20 (girls) Average attendance for two weeks: 95%
I, Mr/Ms (initials and last name): .............................................................................
Confirms that the student teacher (initials and last name).......................................
Has satisfactorily kept the attendance register.
Teacher signature: ....................................
Date: ....................................
School stamp………………..
What challenges did you experience when keeping the class register?
Learners don’t bring school letters stating reasons for being absent. If they do, they bring
them later than expected.
How teachers deal with the following in class.
Absence: When a learner is absent a letter stating why the learner was absent must be
handed to the register teacher immediately upon return to school. The letter is then filed by
the teacher in the class register file and a medical certificate must be provided if a learner
misses a test or exam.
New admissions: New admissions are done at the end of the year for the following year and
at the beginning before school opens. Parents must provide the child’s birth certificate and
final report card (if coming from a different school). As well as fill in an application form. The
school will notify the parent if the child is accepted or placed on a waiting list. Acceptance is
prioritized for residents.
Withdrawals: Parents must come to the school to notify the principal if a child needs to be
withdrawn and give reasons. Parents must also ensure all school material such as textbooks
are returned prior to the child’s leaving. School fees must be up to date. And the school will
provide a final report for the child.
Transfers: If a child needs to be transferred to a different school, the school must provide a
transfer letter, especially if the child is coming from a different province.
, Activity 3: school funds
Are learners paying school funds?
No
Under which quantile is the school classified?
Quantile 3
For what purpose are school funds used?
Maintenance of school surroundings
Salaries for extra help/ security
Activity 4: Discipline
Does the school have a code of conduct?
Yes
If yes, give a brief formulation of the code of conduct.
Learners are expected to abide by the School rules with regard to appearance and
behaviour when representing the School both during School hours and after School
hours, at School and away from School. Learners may not say or do anything that will
discredit themselves or the School. Learner should arrive early to school. All litter must
be placed in refuse bins or wastepaper baskets. A learner will respect those learners in
positions of authority. A learner who is in a position of authority will conduct him or
herself in a manner befitting someone who is in authority. He or she will respect the
rights of other learners and will not abuse such authority bestowed upon him or her
through his or her position.
Do you think involving learners in formulating a school code of conduct is important or
not? Give reasons.
Yes, if learners are included in formulating the code of conduct they will respect the rules
and will better understand the behaviours that accepted and unaccepted within the
school.
Observe, over a period of five school days, and present the rules that are obeyed the most.
Day 1: learners report to school on time.
Day 2: leaners wear proper school uniform.
Day 3: learners greet all teachers as a way of showing respect.
Day 4: learners pick up litter and put it in a bin even if it’s not thrown by them.
Day 5: learners are silent when assembly start.
Activity 5: School buildings and grounds.
In one sentence, briefly comment on the following aspects:
Condition of the school building:
The school building is in a good condition but could do with some renovations.
Condition of the school ground:
Are not in a good condition, there is not specific play area, it is just an open area that all
kids gather there.
Write down one practical recommendation on how to improve the school buildings and
grounds:
, Building needs to be re-painted and school grounds need a soccer and netball field, and
kids jungle gyms.

e.g. paper Bag Science Air pressure
Kettle & water steam NS Water vapour
Activity 7: control of written work
Make three comments about the control and correction of learners’ written work in the
class you visited.
1) One learner is asked to collect all learners’ books and hand them to the teacher for marking.
2) At times learners swap books and mark each other’s work in pencil.
3) Teacher writes corrections on the board with the help of the learners giving their answers.
