Why do we tness test?
Fitness testing
1. To identify strengths and weaknesses
this can be done by comparing test results to other athletes of the same ability or compare to results
which large groups often publish, such as normative data
2. Monitor progress
Testing at the beginning of a tness programme can give the athlete an idea where there levels are at.
In future, they can compare later in the programme. This sets a baseline and this is important
3. Set goals
The incentive to improve can be provided by a goal or a certain test result. By knowing this they will try
again at a later date, so the athlete can try and improve in a area of tness
4. Talent identi cation
A general not speci c testing battery that can provide a basic idea of strengths and weaknesses. This
can allow athletes to see what sport they will be suited to, more like strength based
Reliability-
A test is considered reliable if the results are consistent and repeated over di erent occasions. You
should be able to obtain the same or similar results on separate trails. This is important as you are
often looking for small changes in score
Validity-
This is when the test actually measures what it is set to do. Tests can be reliable and not valid; even
though the one hand grip test is strength, it doesn’t determine the strength of your legs
VO2 max-
This is de ned as the ability of the body to transport and use oxygen to the maximum. Maximal oxygen
consumption depends on the body type and physical conditions. Measure of aerobic power of athletes
Lactate threshold-
Your body can only tolerate a certain amount of lactic acid before your performance decreases or
comes to a stop. The lactic threshold can test how long your body can bu er lactic acid before it starts
to accumulate in the body quicker than it is able to get rid of it. This point is called lactate threshold
Test can be accumulated by;
• Compare to your own previous results
• Compare to other athletes in your groups
• Compare to normative data tables
• Compare to international athletes results
