Stap 1: Wat is het (management) probleem?

In het verleden is er een verband geweest tussen hogere non audit
dienstverlening van accountants en earningsmanagement. In 2000 heeft de SEC
extra regelgeving ingevoerd omtrent de onafhankelijkheid van de accountant om
dit tegen te werken. Het is belangrijk om te onderzoeken of deze regelgeving het
gewenste effect heeft om earnings management te reduceren.

Stap 2: Vanuit welk perspectief wordt het (management) probleem
bestudeerd?

Het probleem is vanuit het perspectief van de accountant geschreven, dit blijkt
met name uit de hypotheses h1a (koppeling van de accountant aan de ‘provision
of non-audit service’) en h1b (koppeling van de accountant aan de ‘provision of
audit service’). Naast het perspectief van de accountant, wordt er ook aandacht
besteed aan het perspectief vanuit het maatschappelijk verkeer. Dit ziet
voornamelijk toe op het verband tussen non-audit fee met earningsmanagement.
Dit verband is van belang voor beleggers.

Stap 3: Wat is de onderzoeksvraag om het (management) probleem te
adresseren?

Het onderzoek richt zich op het verkrijgen van inzicht in de vergoedingen van
accountants en tot welke hoogte deze invloed hebben op de (economische)
besluitvorming van investeerders.

- Waarom kan het informatief zijn voor de investeerders als zij de nonaudit
en audit service fee hoogtes kennen?
- In welke mate is daar een relatie toe?
