Unit 1, Task 4A Resub

M3- Review the effectiveness of the communication skills used during the interactions

1:1 interaction

I acted out a role play virtually using the following scenario. My verbal communication skills
consisted of tone, the reason this is important is because Julie was upset and scared, so I need to use
a soft and gentle tone towards her.

The language I used was simple and not using inappropriate language, and this is important because
Julie was upset and I didn’t want to upset her more by saying words that she would not understand.

I didn’t use slang, jargon, inappropriate or too complex words because I was communicating with
children and this would not be appropriate as they could learn inappropriate language. Jargon would
also be confusing for a child, so I choose to use simple language when speaking to Julie.

The pitch and tone I used was gentle but encouraging, as I said to Julie with encouragement that her
mommy would be back to collect her.

I demonstrated empathy and understanding by telling Julie that mommy would be back to collect
her after lunch time.

My non-verbal communication skills consisted of eye contact. The reason this is important is because
it shows that I was interested in what was being said. I used the SOLER technique. The SOLER
technique involves sitting to face the individual. Open posture, involves having uncrossed arms and
legs. Leaning towards the individual slightly to show an interest in them. Eye contact involves making
eye contact as various points throughout the interaction. Also, I needed to be relaxed as this would
make me more approachable and Julie would be more likely to open up to me.

I choose to smile at Julie because she was scared that mommy wouldn’t be back to collect her, and I
wanted to reassure her that she was safe at nursery and that mommy would be back to collect her
after lunch. I also decided to tell her what we were going to be having at lunch time, and say that we
would play some games before lunch, and engaged with Julie by asking her what games she liked to
play.

I felt this was effective because it would help put her at ease and then she would have an idea when
mommy would be back to collect her.

On reflection I felt that my communication skills could have been more effective if I had comforted
Julie physically, by holding her hand or giving her a hug.

Group interaction

I prepared by writing a script and things I considered were how I was going to communicate with
others in the group.

I acted out a role play virtually using the following scenario-
