Er zijn verschillende soorten getallen:
1. Telgetal/ ordinaal getal: geeft rangorde in telrij of een nummer aan.
2. Hoeveelheidsgetal/ kardinaal getal: geeft bepaalde hoeveelheid aan.
3. Naamgetal: het getal heeft een naam (buslijn 13).
4. Meetgetal: geeft een maat aan (hij is 4 jaar, buiten is het 4 graden).
5. Formeel getal: kaal rekengetal in bv een rekenopgave (36 x 125 = 4500)
6. Natuurlijk getal: getallen waarmee we tellen en rekenen (geen 15 – 47).
Eigenschappen getalsysteem
Arabisch getalsysteem heeft een decimaal structuur (tientallig 0-9)
De plaats-/positiewaarde bepaalt waarde van het cijfer.
Egyptisch/Romeins getalsysteem heeft een additief systeem (waarde bepaald
door symbolen)
Nieuw-Romeins getalsysteem heeft substractief principe (verandering waarde IX)
Binair talstelsel (2tallig 1-0) en hexadecimale (16tallig) talstelsel andere basis.
Betekenissen van bewerkingen
Optellen: samen nemen, aanvullen of toevoegen.
Aftrekken: eraf halen, wegnemen, verminderen, wegdenken, verschil bepalen.
Vermenigvuldig: herhaald optellen, combineren, opp. bepalen, gelijk sprongen
Delen: herhaald aftrekken, opdelen, verdelen.

Eerste getal wordt heel gelaten en tweede getal in stukjes gehakt.
2. Splitsstrategie: beide getallen worden gesplitst in eenheden, tientallen e.d.
