ASSIGNMENT 1 Mahadi
BTEC National Level 3 Construction and the Built
Forms of construction Environment
Introduction
Going to build a sports complex, multi use building for a variety of sports. Also can
be used by the general public. The sports hall is required to be 20 x 40, and must
have no columns or walls inside. Other parts will have spaces for different sports,
a cafeteria, reception and desk space for office workers.
, Portal Frame
Portal frames a order of beams with columns which makes up a framework that
holds the structure’s load to the foundations. This is often used in large extended
areas, present day portal frames started using more steel work because it gives
the structure a lot of strength to hold on to the weight. The steel used is made in
a factory then brought on the construction site or can be put together onsite.
Materials often used for this structure are concrete or steel and timber.
Concrete portal frames are made in a factory ready to be put into place on the
site generally using a crane. This type of structure is often used in low rise
buildings and high rise buildings. This is often used because of its speed and
efficiency to get the job done quickly.
Using portal frames gives a lot of benefits some are that it gives a large open
space inside of the building and can be easily built. The time it takes to made and
put into place is very short so it speeds up the construction process. Also if a
building were to be demolished in the future the materials used to build the
structure in the past can be recycled making it a environmentally friendly building
method. Timber frame can also make the structure look more aesthetically
pleasing with many unique timbers to choose from such as Spruce which is cheap
and can be easily turned into furniture such as chairs, tables, dressers even bed
frames.
There are many disadvantages of using steel frames such as the fact it needs to be
properly maintained, rust preventing coating needs to be put on the steel so the
steel does not get weak and cause the building to fall apart, or if timber is used it
would mean fire’s would be able to spread very quickly and easily throughout the
building.
