Unit 5 Learning Aim A (Assignment 1 Task 1)
Introduction: This assignment will examine principles, values and skills, which
underpin meeting the care and support needs of individuals.
P1: Explain the importance of promoting equality and diversity for individuals
with different needs
Equality is about making sure that every citizen has a fair and equal chance to make
the best of their lives and talents, regardless of their age, sex/gender, race, culture,
religion, beliefs, ability, or their sexual orientation, no person should have poor life
chances. Diversity is about respecting the qualities that make people unique and
special, such as their cognitive ability and personal traits, as well as the things that
affect their identity and who they are for example, their ethnicity, age, gender,
cultural background and many more.
We understand that in case study 1, Valerie B, aged 24 years suffers from mental
health problem and has been suffering from it ever since she was six due to the loss
of her parents. A person who works in a health and social care sector should support
and understand Valerie’s situation and give her the care she needs. She should be
treated fairly and equally as it can help Valeria to feel more secure and make her feel
that she is cared for regardless of who she is. We also learn that Valeria is obese,
has hearing impairment and has a low self-esteem due to her obesity, in order to
meet Valeria’s needs, the service providers should treat her with respect so that she
can feel more comfortable around people and not worry about people judging her,
the service provider can accomplish this by having effective communicational skills
and is willing to give support so that she can overcome her problems, because we
know that Valerie suffers from hearing impairment so it is essential that the person
supports Valerie to improve on her hearing and other health conditions she is
suffering from. The service provider should also help Valerie to improve on her self-
esteem, by understanding that she is different and needs more help than others, so
the service provider should promote diversity in order for Valeria to feel more
appreciated for who she is and that she shouldn’t take into account what other
people say about her as she is unique in her own way. Furthermore, it is also
important that the service provider promotes equality so that it can give Valeria the
courage and support she need to build up her self- esteem and become more
confident in her self in order for her to not feel embarrassed and afraid of the
teenagers who have been bullying her. So, by promoting equality and diversity
Valeria will then feel proud of who she is and might try to build her self-esteem up
more.
It is important to promote equality toward Tremayne M, aged 54 years, in case study
2 who has been facing multiple difficulties which includes him of being born with
autism, having wheat allergy, outburst of temper and the fact that he has to deal with
his broken leg. The service provider should show equality by treating Tremayne
equally and by giving him fair treatment despite of his disability because he has the
right to receives the same treatment as every other individual. It is stated that
Tremayne is quite disruptive and is subject to outbursts of temper, therefore, it is vital
for the service provider to treat him respectfully and not use his condition as an
excuse for not delivering equal rights to him if he makes them feel distressed as well
because it is the service providers duty to promote equality and diversity by showing
, empathy as they should understand that Tremayne is a person who suffers from
autism, so he needs to be taken care in a propre manner which can encourage him
to stay calm and reduce the outburst of his temper. The service uses should also
take into account about Tremayne’s wheat allergy and the facts that he tends to eat
pizza and sandwiches. To overcome this the service provider can buy food that does
not contain wheat like gluten free pizzas and bread as it is important for the service
provider to think about what Tremayne likes and about his allergy at the same time
so that they can provide him with what he wants. However, the service user should
also be aware that Tremayne is able to make his own decisions in what he likes and
what he doesn’t like, so by promoting equality and diversity it will give individuals a
fair and balance treatment despite their differences.
In case study 4, we learn that Billy G, aged 18 years, has visual impairments,
asthmatic problems and stomach pains, when he lived on the streets due to his
personal family problem he had with his mother’s partner. It is important that Billy
receives treatment from a health care professional to help him withstand the
problems he has been facing, so it is essential for the service provider to treat Billy G
with care and respect as it will help Billy G to recover from his conditions more
quickly if they give him the right service for his needs, they will be able to promote
equality and diversity toward him. By doing this, we can give other individuals the
courage and trust that their protected characteristics are valued and we are able to
give care to all difference individuals who needs support.
Overall, the Equality act 2010 protect each individuals’ differences and promoted
diversity and equality. Through this law it helps the vulnerable people to feel more
confident in themselves as they will be able to get help from people who will not
discriminate against them. This also helps the service to promote anti-discriminatory
practice and give everyone a fair and equal treatment regardless of their differences.
M1: Analyse the impact of preventing discrimination for individuals with
different needs.
Discrimination is the treatment towards individuals and groups that is unequal or
prejudicial based on factors such as ethnicity, gender, age or sexual orientation.
There are four different types of discrimination, one is unfair discrimination, this is
when an individual is treated unfairly than someone else, the next one is direct
discrimination, this is when someone shows rude and offensive attitude to another
individual on purpose because of their differences, the third one is indirect
discrimination which is difficult to prove because a person can say something that is
disrespectful but in a amusing way which causes people to wonder if it was meant to
be serious or just for fun, lastly there is the positive discrimination where a person
makes choices or decisions that is made in favour of a person.
In case study 1, it can be possible for Valerie, aged 24 years to experience some
kind of discrimination from the people who are meant to provide her with care. One
reason why she might have to face this can be due to her being obese, this might
have a long-term effect and a short-term effect on her. One example of a short-term
effect she might experience due to the discrimination is that she might feel
embarrassed and upset because of the criticisms she might have had to face; this
can lead to her to question herself and make her feel less valued and unwanted.
