P4- Key developments in travel and tourism
Introduction-
In the travel and tourism industry, there are a number of different key developments that
have allowed for the tourism industry to develop and allow for there to be a better and
easier way to do things such as how accessible booking and planning a holiday is and the
speed in which this can be done. Over the years since the 1960, the industry has seen many
different improvements in all key parts of tourism which has given the world more of an
opportunity to gain access to easier travel.
Key components of travel-
Legislation
1. Package travel regulations-
This is a regulation which allows for protection and access to compensation when there are
issues for the people who purchase package holidays from tour operators. Such as when a
hotel is over booked which will mean that the tour operators cannot say that is outside their
area of control which is what the regulation allows.
The package travel regulations have developed much over the years to help cover people
and ensure that they are protected. In 1992, when the regulation was starting to be
enforced, it stated that it would cover the bookings made to accommodation that was
booked within the last 24 hours and that tour operators must provide information before
they allow bookings to be made and before the tourists start their holiday. In the most
recent development in 2015, the regulations changed to have more detail to what parts of a
tourists holiday they will protect which was in terms of cancellations, liability, repatriation
and refunds. This is something that they have allowed to apply to European and foreign
places that sell package holidays to travellers. This shows certain amount of development in
this section of travel and shows that there has been a continuous action to ensure that
tourists are kept safe. This has been done by monitoring the tourists that have issues with
their package holidays which will then be ensured protection.
2. Air passenger duty-
This is when the government makes a charge to the passengers flying from or within the UK,
it is a form of British tax on aviation which was introduced in 1994. They will make the
charges on each passenger that are on a flight that departs from the UK which will also
depend on the distance of their final destination and the class of travel they have selected.
The regulation was first introduced within the UK 1994 which saw the airlines charging
passengers £5 per person to take flights that are within Europe and £10 if they wanted to fly
to destinations that where located anywhere else. In most recent years around 2020, it has
seen a development in what type of duty would be charged and that these duties would
now apply to the differing class types. It has been shown that for 2021 April 1 st, they have
been developing their duties and now plan to release the new duties that will apply to
different destinations and classes which has been placed in two bands (band A – band B).
This indicates that there has been a big development in this type of regulation in where
duties would be charged, they have added on new charges which had been added into the
two bands which would now also depend on the price of ones’ ticket. This graph here shows
the different types of duties that are being charged depending on the type of class or
distance of destination. The prices on duties has also developed and have increased with
some of them costing over £100. In Band A the costs will apply to people travelling less than
2000 miles and in band B they apply to people travelling further than 2000 miles which is

different from what the charges and the distances use to be as some destination in Europe
where further than 2000 miles but only has a duty of £5.
Product development
3. Holiday camps-
A holiday camp is a place that allows for parents and children to both have entertainment
that will normally be proved by holiday camps. This would normally be achieved by the
camp providing entertainment for both parties at a low and affordable price which has all-
inclusive prices that will sometimes have a service for children which will allow for parents
to enjoy themselves. The tourists there will normally stay within the facility which will fill
them in with accommodation and entertainment.
When holiday camps where first introduced by Billy Butlin which had the aims of making the
perfect holiday within one area without having to leave the resort as it offered all the
required aspects of a holiday which would be offered to 60 people at a time. In the 1960s as
this is when the tourism industry started to developed, the world started to see more of
these holiday camps and their size started to increase, some of them even allowing for up to
thousands of people to be able to stay there. A good example of this is ‘Butlins’ which saw
its one 60-person holiday camp increase to 9 holiday camps that where able to hold 10,000
people. This shows a real development in how the holiday camps have developed over the
years and how they have allowed for more experience for children and parents. The
development in holiday camps has been important to travel and tourism in the ways of
making an easy holiday for people to go on along with the fact that they will have separate
activities for children and adults to enjoy. There has been quite a development in holiday
camps over the years in the amount of stuff they offer and the number of people that could
stay in one holiday camp at a time for a longer stay.
4. Increase in package holidays-
A package holiday is when a number of different required components of travel such as
transport, accommodation and attractions are put together to the liking of tourist at an
inclusive price. It will normally be a specialised or a selection of package holidays which will
differ between locations and time of year. Package holidays will be available for different
areas in the world and for different purposes and the amount of time and money a person
will want to spend. Package holidays have been designed to allow for an easier way to book
a holiday and to be able to book a holiday with in a budget.
In the 1960s, there was a big change in how package holidays where booked and the
number of them that where sold. This was started by an increase in hotels being
constructed as well as the development of larger and faster aircraft allowing for quicker and
more numbers of flights in a day. ‘Clarksons’ was a good example of a holiday businesses
that grew quickly thanks to its developments in package holidays, they where interested in
the pile-it-high and sell-it-cheap which would allow for many people to get more affordable
holidays. This all allowed for more package holidays to be made as of these developments
giving way to an increase in interest of package holidays. More destinations where now
easily accessible as of the increase in speeds of travel allowing for people to travel further.
