P1 – Describe career opportunities within different industries in the travel and tourism
sector
Travel and tourism career opportunities –
Airlines:
This area of career opportunities will involve a person to be very polite and patient as they
could be working in customer service. A person will handle bookings for tickets, checking
luggage, cleaning airplanes, ensuring the plane is in good condition to fly or flying the plane.
A person is also able to work their way up in the airlines and gain promotion.
Flight attendant –
This job will involve a person ensure that passengers are kept safe. They will do this by
making sure everyone follows the security rules and regulations that are required to keep a
person safe on-board a flight. As well as this, flight attendants will do their best to keep the
passengers calm and comfortable, especially on long flights. They will need to hand out
amenities for passengers such as towels, blankets, amenities kit and food at meal times.
Handling rude passengers will also come into play within the job as not all passengers are
very reasonable.
If a flight attendant has worked at an airline for a few years, they will be considered a ‘senior
flight attendant’ and will stand the chance of being promoted to a manager position. This
will require them to schedule, recruit and instruct all the other flight attendants to ensure
the flight goes smoothly.
Pilot –
This will require an individual to understand how to fly a plane. They will need to have their
commercial pilots licence and will have to fly a good number of years and hours to ensure
they are skilled enough to get a promotion. They will be promoted from the title of ‘First
Officer’ to ‘Captain’, this will be indicated by the four stripes they will have added to their
uniform.
Pilots will have to fly passengers for either a short-haul or long-haul flights and will take
turns flying the plane. There are usually two pilots in the cockpit, one is captain and one is
co-pilot. One will complete paper work and the other will fly and speak to air traffic control.
Pilots will normally take turns doing each others tasks.
Accommodation:
This will involve working in an area that will hold people overnight and give them a place to
stay for sleep. There are a number of jobs in the accommodation industry and most have a
promotional side to them.
Front desk agent –
This will involve a person providing service to customers in the form of bookings through
walk ins, emails, online bookings and phone bookings. Through this, they will give customers
information on rooms and what rooms they can reserve. They will need to have a good
understanding on details of the accommodation they are working in as customers will want
to ask questions and will want details (these can include recommendations of the areas
activities)
A front desk agent can get promoted up to executive front desk agent which will entail them
being in charge of all the bookings and how they are organised along with dealing with
customer service and complaints.
Hotel General Manager –
