Er was een god, Vulcanus. God van de smeedkunst, vuur en ook vulkanen.
In het Grieks: Hefaystos.
De dag voor de vulkaanuitbarsting zou het feest van Vulkanus gevierd zijn,
maar ja, dat weet je nooit zeker.
Pyroklastische golf is de steen en het stof.
College 2
Leven in een oude stad
Plinius over de uitbarsting van de Vesuvius
- Hoe wordt de uitbarsting van de Vesuvius weergegeven?
- Welke kennis over vulkaanuitbarstingen heeft Plinius?
- Wat waardeert neef Plinius in het optreden van zijn oom?
- Welk beeld ontstaat hier van de Romeinen?
- Aswolken, vallende pluimstenen, woeste zee, donkere luchten
- Vrij weinig, hij weet alleen wat hem verteld is over pluimstenen etc.
Denkt dat het door luchtdruk komt.
- Dat hij rustig was en dat hij de mensen wilde helpen, dapper.
- Niet per se Romeinen, maar elite. Dapper.
Uitbarsting die beschreven wordt door Plinius wordt een Plinische
uitbarsting genoemd.

Bijna niets, er zijn verschillende dingen gevonden, Etruskische zuil en
potten. De naam kan ook iets betekenen.

De ontwikkeling van Pompeii: begint in the Old City, kronkelig
stratenpatroon. In stage 2 wonen oude ‘’rijke’’ huizen zoals het huis met
de Faun. Daar kun je dus uit op maken dat hier de eerste ‘’elite’’ woonde.
Pompeii wordt een Romeinse stad na de bondgenotenoorlog.
In Pompeii is een Indiaas beeldje gevonden, dus moeten zij contact
hebben gehad met India.
Amfitheater: rellen bij de gladiatorenspelen. Keizer om hulp gevraagd.
Dus: duidelijke band met Rome.

Het uiterlijk van de Romeinse stad
Trottoirs
Mary Beard: de straten waren te smal voor twee wagens.
Groeven/schaafsel in de stoeprand kun je zien hoe de kar gereden heeft.
Watervoorziening
Pompeii had een aftakking van een groter aquaduct. Het merendeel van
