English book review
By: Floren Bout (V4B)
Book title: How I live now
Author: Meg Rosoff
Year of publication: 2004
Number of pages: 200

The plot
Daisy is sent to live in the English countryside with her cousins she’s never met
before. But then suddenly England is attacked and occupied by an unnamed enemy.
The cousins live on their own and Daisy falls in love with her cousin Edmond.
Everything went well, until they get separated.
But Daisy wants to go back to her cousins and she takes a dangerous trip back to
her cousin’s home. When they get back, the phone rings and it turns out to be
Daisy’s father. He sends her to a hospital in the USA.
Six years later she goes back to her cousins in England. She finds Edmund and her
other cousins, broken by the war. She explains why she wasn’t there, why she
abandoned them. And Daisy decides to stay in England, with Edmond.

The setting
The story takes place in the future, because it’s about a next war. It takes place in
England.

The theme
The universal idea of the book is war, love and friendship.

The protagonist
The main character is Elizabeth, but everyone calls her Daisy. She is a 15-year-old
girl from New York, but she moved to her cousins in England. Then suddenly a war
came and her life changed.

You and the main character
I can relate to the main character. She has the same age as me. And she is also a
girl. But despite that, I don’t understand how she can fall in love with her cousin.

Your opinion
I think the beginning of the book was very boring, I had trouble reading trough. But at
the end it became a bit more exiting.
I think the book was very long-lasting. There was a lot of information that was
unnecessary and tedious. And there was little excitement.

The best part
The best part of the book is chapter 1 of part 2. There is a leap in time and Daisy
ended up in the hospital. This chapter raised many questions, which caused tension.

Like: yes or no?
I wouldn’t recommend this book to my friends, because I thought it was boring. I’ve
read a lot of books in my life and this one was one of the most boring one’s. So I
would recommend another book, because I’m not excited about this one.
