Definición de HEMOPTISIS
Este síntoma se caracteriza por la expectoración hemorrágica proveniente del tracto respiratorio
inferior de localizaciónsubglótica. Es un síntoma respiratorio frecuente y en ocasiones puede
atentar con la vida del paciente. Es la manifestación de una enfermedad significativa.
Por lo general es una hemorragia leve o moderada, autolimitada, que obliga a investigar la causa
subyacente. La historia, el examen físico y la radiografía de tórax, junto con el conocimiento de las
enfermedades comórbidas y factores demográficos, guían la evaluación de los pacientes con
hemoptisis leve a moderada.
En sus formas grave y masiva, la hemoptisis constituye un cuadro de extrema gravedad con
elevada morbimortalidad, que genera gran ansiedad tanto en el paciente como en el médico
tratante.
