, Introduction
In the study conducted by Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936), the learning method of classical

conditioning is put to test by measuring salivation levels of dogs through several stimuli.

Whereas Pavlov’s experiment demonstrated that dogs where showing clear signs of classical

conditioning, his study was limited to dogs.

On the other hand, psychologists Watson and Rayner in 1920, held what they referred to as

“The Little Albert Experiment” where an infant was used to monitor his reaction to several

animals after continuously hearing unpleasant noises when seeing them, thus leading to him

directly associating the noise with the animals. Later on, in 1943, Clark Hull presented his

“Principles of Behaviour” where he stated that deprivation in organisms lead to need, which

consequently activated behaviour used for survival, said theory was based off Pavlov’s

conditioning law1. The following investigation was designed to understand classical

conditioning in a similar situation, using Goldfish instead of dogs, evaluating their response to

sound with food allocation.

Background

VERTEBRATES: FISH

Vertebrate fishes belong to the phylum Chordata and have existed in our planet for over 450

million years. As other phylum, they evolved, developing better features for adaptation to

their habitats. The study of their ecology, ethology and other morphological and

physiological features has been a source of reliable and important knowledge in the evolution

of vertebrates overall.
