De cortex processed informatie op verschillende niveaus. De
posterieure hersengebieden staan in voor primair het registreren,
secundair de processing en teriair de integratie van input. De
anterieure hersengebieden op hun beurt staan in voor tertiair
problemsolving, secundair het opstellen van een actieplan en
primair de uitvoering hiervan dus het omzetten naar een output.
Hiervoor hebben de frontal lobes nood aan ondersteunende
structuren zoals het limbisch systeem, het striataal systeem en het
cerebellum.
De subcorticale circuits (! in interactie met corticale regio’s) :
- Limbisch systeem : helpt de frontal lobes met drive / motivatie om gedrag te bekomen.
- Striataal systeem (basale ganglia) : helpt met verderling van energie over functies -> meer energie naar
prioritait gedrag en minder naar gewoonte gedrag (habits)
- Cerebellum : helpt met leerproces en automatisatie van handelingen, zorgt voor smoothness van handelingen
aan de hand van motorisch leren.
Via de thalamus (of hersenstam) kan er ook rechtstreeks info worden doorgegeven naar de amygdala of parietale
cortex (level 2)
