Engels assignment a thousand splendid sunsThis is a farewell letter from Nana to Mariam, it was written on the day Nana killed herself. Mariam
never found the letter, but Laila did when she went to Herat to find out more about Mariam’s
history.
My dearest Mariam,
I hope this letter finds you well. I need you to know that I did not want to make you feel guilty in any
way. It was my decision to make. My miserable existence has been lasting long enough now. I believe
that the only way to break this cycle for you, is for me to go. I do not want the same fate for you. I
hope your father will take care of you and he will provide for you. I hope he will prove to you to be
the man you always thought him to be.
With me being gone, you can live elsewhere and be with your father's family. I know I have always
held you back when it came to his family, but I know how strong a family relationship can be, and I
want that for you. I want you to experience all the good in the world. Maybe Jalil will even let you go
to school and let you be the modern, strong woman I have always known you would become.
I know that I have been hard on you and did not always make you feel loved. The way we used to
fight about my box and the things about my past that I wanted to stay hidden. Some things are better
for you not to know about my past. I think you would never look at me the same if you knew. Just
remember, that some things better stay hidden. I have made a lot of mistakes, but having you was
not one of them.
The times I was angry, I would think how my life was if I never had you. I always blamed you, my
harami, as the reason why my life did not turn out the way I wanted it to, while all along it was my
own mistake. I think that my anger took over on those moments and it made you feel incredibly
unwanted. I hate myself for making you feel that way, no child should feel unwanted.
Hopefully you got the future with Jalil and the family like you have always wanted. I hope you will live
your life to the fullest and achieve every goal that you have set for yourself. I hope that you will go to
school and that you will persue your dreams. When you find yourself a nice man, get married, and
maybe have kids. Give them all your love, I know you will be a great mother one day even though I
did not give the right example.
