Uitgrawings vir hominienfossiele het in die 1930’s en 1940’s begin met die werk
van die beroemde paleontoloog Robert Broom, en is vandag steeds aan die gang.
Twee van die grotte, Sterkfontein en Swartkrans, het elke meer as 500 individuele
hominienfossiele opgelewer.
Die meeste van die fossiele is beenfragmente en tande, maar daar is tog verskeie
skedels en skedelbeendere gevind.
Die Wieg se terreine dra sowat 35% by van alle vroeë hominienfossiele tot dusver
bekend uit Afrika.
Dit sluit in drie australopithesene-spesies en drie vroeë lede van die genus Homo.
Hierdie fossiele dek die tydperk vanaf 3,5 miljoen jaar gelede tot slegs 100 000 tot
200 000 jaar gelede.
