Assignment A – Teacher Language
1. Conventional

- T: Does anyone know a word that means agreeing to the standard of what is usually believed by society in
general? People who is mainly narrow-minded.

- S 1: Traditions?

- T: That's a very good suggestion, yes. But the word I am thinking of means you are established in life and live an
ordinary normal day to day life that is widely acceptable in general. Traditions are usually followed for example a
bride is considered to wear white on her wedding day or shaking hands when meeting someone new.

- S 2: Convention.

- T: Great work! Convention is a way in which something is usually done. What type of word is convention?

- S 2: A noun.

- T: That's it. Well done. Convention is a noun word. What will the describing form of the word be with a different
ending? Sarah?

- S arah: Conventional.

- T: Fantastic Sarah. Can anyone tell me what type of word is conventional? (writes on board)

-S 3: An adjective.

-T: That’s it. Well done. Conventional is adjective that describes the…?

- Class: Noun.

- T: Good. How many syllables in conventional?

- S 3: Four

- T Yes, and where's the stress, first, second, third or fourth syllable? Con-ven-tio-nal

- S 1 Second.

T- Good work! Again, everyone: conventional

I will first explain the meaning to the class: Conventional means things that are seen to be normal, ordinary
and tending to follow what is done or the accepted way of life.
I will then explain the meaning to the class in context: I will explain to the class conventional is someone or
something widely accepted, or something related to a convention. Something that is mainstream is
conventional, or the usual way of doing things in life. In other words, lacking originality, or individuality. An
example of conventional is a bride wearing white on her wedding day. I will then show a picture of a bride
wearing white.
Conventional implies being raised in a conservative manner. An upbringing based on custom believes or
traditions usually handed down from a previous generation.
Now I will explain the form and pronunciation of the word: Conventional is an adjective, an word that adds
character to a noun. Describing things that are normal that follows the accepted way of life. (The TEFL
Academy, Unit 4) and the pronunciation is /kən'venʃənəl/. There are four syllables with the stress on the
second syllable - oOoo
I will then explain to them that there are some other things to keep in mind. Conventional have different
meanings depending on the context it is given.

, -Conventional weapons refer to weapons that are not nuclear.
-Conventional behaviour means following the usual practices of the past.
-Conventional wisdom means opinions or theories that existed for a long time and that most people agree
with. (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/conventional)
To check students understanding I will then ask them the following concept questions (The TEFL Academy,
Unit 2).
1. Are you established in life? YES
2. Are you considered to be very original or creative? NO
3. Do you go to school every day? Yes
4. Is your way of living acceptable? Yes
I will then explain: Thus, having a conventional way of life is doing what is expected from you by your
parents and society in general.
I will then use the technique eliciting (The TEFL Academy, Unit 2) after I explained the above and ask the
class if they can give me another word for conventional in this context. The answer that I will be looking for
here is ‘Traditional’.
Lastly, I will ask the students to note down the new word in their vocabulary books so that they don’t forget
the word.
