Grade in A level Chemistry: A* , Overall: 272/300
Unit 6: 60/60

,Content:
1. Transition Metal
2. Organic Chemistry

Transition metals
Jan 18, Q 5

Explanations:
a) Total charge of L2 = -4. Charge of L is -2.
b) Neutral ligand, so the only charge will be the charge of the complex in.
A is your answer

,Note: Remember that copper and chromium are exceptions when it comes to writing
their electronic configuration in the spdf notation.
Cr= …. 4s1 3d5
Cu = …. 4s1 3d9

, Differences between ligand exchange and deprotonation:

A deprotonation reaction occurs when water (added to the complex ion) loses a proton to
become a hydroxide (OH) ion.

A ligand exchange reaction occurs when the existing ligands with the complex ion are totally
replaced.

Q. Which of the following can’t disproportionate?
A Cl 2
B BrO-
C SO32-
D NO3-

Explanation:
In Cl2 , chlorine has a valency of 0. It can change to -1 or +1 valency.
In NO3- , nitrogen has a valency of ‘+5’ . It can change to a lower valency, but can not move
to a higher valency. So NO3- can not disproportionate.

Q. Which of these complex ions could exist as stereoisomers?
A [Co(NH 3)6]3+
B [Co(NH3)5(H2O)]3+
C [Co(NH3)5(Cl)]3+
D [Co(NH3)4(Cl)2]+

Explanation:

Remember that for stereoisomerism, there must be :

i) At least 2 different ligands

ii) 2 molecules of each ligand

This is only possible with option D.

Option A has only 1 ligand, Option C & D has only 1 molecule of a ligand.
