Introduction

For this experiment, what we had to do is test the acidity of liquids using a pH strip. The acidity

of a liquid is determined by its color, which matches to the pH scale. If a liquid has a pH of 7 or

higher, it is alkaline, if it has a pH of below 7, it is acidic, and lastly if it has a pH of 7, it is

neutral. Measuring the acidity of certain liquids is very important because if a liquid is too

acidic, it may be bad for our health. For example, an everyday liquid such as water, if it is too

acidic, we can not drink it because it would be harmful. Another thing to consider is that if water

is too alkaline and has a high pH, it could cause skin problems such as itchiness, irritation, and

dry skin. That is why measuring the acidity of liquids, especially water, is very important to us

and our health.

Hypothesis

Before experimenting, we speculate that the lemon juice will have the most acidity out of the

liquids. From prior knowledge, we know that lemon juice is naturally acidic due to a high

amount of citric acid, which is what makes some candies sour. Similar to the lemon, the orange

juice is acidic. Being a citrus fruit, we can hypothesize that it will be acidic. Along with lemon

and orange juice, we believe that the vinegar and soy sauce will be acidic due to it being

fermented. In consideration of the other liquids, we believe that they will not be as acidic.
