Equality and diversity
Equality
Equality is defined as ensuring that every individual, no matter their race, wealth or
background, has the same rights and opportunities to make the most of their life. To ensure
that everyone is treated equally, the government introduced the 2010 Equality Act which
included 9 protected characteristics to prevent discrimination:
• age
• disability
• gender reassignment
• marriage and civil partnership
•pregnancy and maternity
•race
•sex
•sexual orientation

Equality in the health and social care sector ensures everyone has equal access to the services
they need to improve their care. No matter their background, race, learning needs or disability,
everyone has the same rights to access the healthcare and support they need. The term ‘rights’
is defined as a legal entitlement that ensures basic freedoms which belong to all individuals,
based on shared values. The importance of ensuring people’s rights is due to the fact they have
physical and emotional effects on the service user.
