Medicine Man (1992): Reaction Paper
Biodiversity is essential for human survival and the survival of other living things. In a variety of
ways, our biological environment acts as a source of resources. Biodiversity encompasses a vast
range of animals, organisms, and yet-to-be-discovered living things. It offers fundamental
materials and other necessities for food production, medical research, and other crucial activities.
In biodiversity, potential cures or treatments for diseases are made possible because most of the
medicine is from the medicinal plant. An example, in the film “The Medical Man”, Dr. Campbell
created medicine for cancer using the bromeliad. Therefore, the loss of biodiversity may hinder
the discovery of possible treatments for illnesses.
Research that utilizes biodiversity is a study that uses different species in creating medicinal
treatments. This kind of research has a goal to give positive impacts on the community however,
if unethical practices are done, then this will affect the community negatively. For example,
suppose a researcher wants to create a cure for cancer. In that case, they might use biodiversity,
like animals, plants, or other species in the ecosystem, to develop a cure for cancer. An improper
way could be the use of human test subjects, which could lead to death, or the excessive use of
animals, which could lead to their extinction. Biodiversity means the variety of life on Earth; hence
if improper utilization is applied, we may run out of resources.
Cultural norms or traditions significantly ensure that natural components of biodiversity are
preserved for the long run. These practices or customs not only aid in the preservation of natural
resources but also help in the conservation of biodiversity. The film “The Medicine Man”, shows
that the tribe living in the forest is shown to be disease-free because they ingest the bromeliad
flower. In addition, it is said that consuming it is part of their culture. This is the reason that
prompted Dr. Campbell to create a cure for cancer using this bromeliad flower. Therefore, culture
can create a pathway to preserve human health and develop medicines.
Today, globalization is being pushed through by every nation. Successive infrastructure projects
are being built on land and even in the ocean using modern technology. Our environment is the
first one that is affected because of these. Our ecosystem has continued to deteriorate as a result of
deforestation, climate change, overexploitation, and other factors, destroying our biodiversity.
Human lives are equally as vital as biodiversity. We should not allow anything to demolish it
because of the benefits it provides to everyone. Natural resources or components are used to make
medicines and other essential things for human life. Therefore, no biodiversity means no natural
resources and no medicines. Hence, we should protect the environment and biodiversity since they
play a vital role in human life.
