G P S Stands for: Global Positioning System
How does it work?
There are 24 to 32 operating satellites
that orbit earth at an altitude of 22,200 km.
The receiver in your smartphone or GPS unit uses signals
from the satellites to work out the distance between your
location and the satellites.
The GPS triangulates the distance and determines your
exact latitude and longitude coordinates to the nearest few meters.
GPS has MANY uses today. For each of the following give an example of how GPS is being
used:
Agriculture- An example of GPS being used in agriculture is when farmers use it to
navigate in low visibility conditions such as fog, rain, darkness, or thunderstorms.
Environment- An example of GPS being used for the environment is when people studying
the environment use GPS to identify problems and locate where they are happening.
Recreation- GPS allows people to enjoy outdoor activities more because they always have
a precise location of where they are and other people can find their location to locate
them if they get lost.

, What are the dangers of GPS? ie. Carol’s story
GPS has many dangers, especially with privacy and security. In Carol’s story, she moved
away from her ex-boyfriend to Texas and wanted to get away from him. What she didn’t
know was that her ex-boyfriend planted a GPS tracking device in her car that was
always giving him her live location. So since he had her location, he was following her
and stalking her. Whenever he would find her, he would always be holding an open
laptop and then she knew what had happened. She went to the mechanic, police, and
even the FBI but they could not help her.

ESRI GIS and digital mapping: A Map for Every StoryWatch the
video and describe some examples of how digital maps are being used.
In the video, there were many different types of digital maps and how they are used. One
of the ways digital maps are being used right now is to track the migration and life of
different animals including penguins, sharks, birds and many more. Another example of
how digital maps are used now is to track the routes of different transportation including
boats, buses, trains, cars, and more. Another example of how maps are being used is for
navigation and getting to a destination. Navigation is significant because it helps us know
the way or direction we need to travel to get to a destination.
