Syllabus Type:
Multi-syllabus

Course Aims:
By the end of the course, the student will be better able to…
 Will have improved and built confidence in his listening skills – E.g., listening for Gist and
Specific information from various listening activities
 Speak with more confidence and fluency in casual and business settings
 Will have practiced his writing and reading skills as well

Course Rationale: (700 – 1000 words)

Here you need to include:

 why you have chosen this syllabus type
 why you have chosen the topic(s) covered
 why you have chosen this target language/skill
 the rationale behind the structure of the course, e.g., why is it in this order?
 how the course will meet the learner’s needs

I have chosen the multi-syllabus as according to his Analysis questionnaire he would like
help with several skills, and this allows me to tailor the course around what he wants. It
gives both Teacher and student the opportunity to re-evaluate the lessons during the
course and make any changes that might be needed according to the students’ progress as
we go along (maybe decrease or increase difficulty as we progress). This also allows me
to focus on the areas that he is struggling and make any necessary adjustments.

According to his Analysis his main weaknesses are listening and speaking (pronunciation)
so I have started the course by spending most of the time with Listening and speaking
lessons. I have used several listening methods – Audio, videos and songs and the speaking
practice is to allow him to have free discussions with me (the Teacher) where he can
practice both formal and informal conversations and I can pick up where he is struggling
and can adjust the lessons. I have tried to structure his lessons around his interests and
hobbies to keep his interest in learning and as per his request to make them fun and
interesting.

I have chosen a multi-Skills Syllabus according to his Analysis – in his analysis he
mentions that he finds it difficult when listening to Native English speakers and then to
have a conversation with them. He then expressed his wish to improve his listening and
speaking skills therefore the bulk of the course has been set around improving these skills.

The activities and tasks and homework that I have chosen in the first 5 lessons will give the

, student ample opportunity to practice his listening and speaking skills and I wanted him to
become comfortable with casual conversation before moving onto the more formal
conversation needed in the working environment.

For example, the first lesson would be an introduction to the course, and I thought that we
would not start immediately with new vocabulary and use some fun activities for me to
evaluate the actual level of his listening and speaking skills and for us to get to know each
other. He will spend more time speaking to listening and then having some casual
conversation. I have chosen a short piece of Audio on Football. He will listen the first time
for Gist and then we will chat with me leading him with some questions. He will then listen
again for Specific information, and he will complete a Gap fill exercise. He will then listen
for a third time with the text and then he is to try and correct some spelling (he said that
his written English is good, but this will also evaluate that) – the second activity is much
the same but with a well-known song from the Beatles.

From there I will move to introducing some vocabulary in the second lesson but have
structured the lesson around one of his interests which is Technology and per his video
interview, he currently works for Renault so I have used some vehicle terms for the
vocabulary, videos, and the work sheets – this will still be focusing on his listening and
speaking skills. He will spend a lot of time speaking to me and this will give me the
opportunity to help him with his pronunciation – which will also allow me to make notes
and use these difficulties for future lessons.

The lessons will help him to become more comfortable with listening for Gist and Specific
Information and therefore help him with understanding Native English Speakers and also
to be able to speak with more confidence.

The first five lessons have been structured around the Students Needs Analysis and the
Video interview. I have used the students interests and hobbies to create the various
listening and speaking lessons which should keep him interested in learning more.

I felt that starting the course with spending more time with listening and speaking lessons
with fun activities would encourage him and help him.

The course is also structured in such a way that changes can be made as the lessons
progress – either to bring the level down a bit if it is too difficult or to move it up a level as
his skills improve

The course will also meet the students’ requirements as per the Analysis by using original
and fun activities to learn
