Unit 22: Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport
Assignment 3
Selected sport: Football
Referee being assessed: George Alexander
Referee Name: George Alexander
Assessor Name: Harry Holmes and Rhys Henry
Date Of Assessment: 20/10/20
Location: Cambridge Rugby Club
Tasks to be observed: Comments
Application of Rules: 30 seconds into the match one of the players tackled another player with two feet and
their studs were up and so the referee applies the foul play rule so he gives the
offending player a yellow card for his actions which is definitely justified by the laws of
football
There is then a fight a few minutes into the match and the referee doesn’t give anything
to any of the players involved as there was only pushing and no violent actions such as
punching or kicking and his decision is in line with the rules.
Just before the end of the match one of the attacking players kicks the ball and the
defensive player, who is running towards him, jumps into him after he has kicked the
ball so the referee follows the foul play rule and gives a free kick to the attacking team
and it was deemed as no yellow card which is the correct decision according to the
rules.
Control of game: 30 seconds into the match one of the players tackled another player with two feet and
their studs were up and the referee controls the game by not allowing a fight to start
and making his decision quickly.

then he acts.
The final reason that the ref doesn’t have a lot of control of the game is because when
players start shouting at him that there was a foul then he would often go along with
what they said instead of watching the game closely so he can come up with his own
decision
Effective Scoring: The referee’s scoring in this game wasn’t very good as he would often forget what the score was
and he would then have to rely on what the players told him
Ensure health & safety: Before the game the referee checked all of the players studs to make sure that they
matched the standards that are required for them to play in boots
Before the game the referee checked the pitch to make sure it was smooth and there
was no potholes on the pitch that the players could twist an ankle in.
When the two footed tackle was made, the referee got the correct medical officers on
quickly to make sure that he was alright after a very bad tackle
Relationship with others: His relationship with the touch judges is very good as he will always speak with them if
he is unsure of a decision and he trusts what they say happened and he goes with it.
His relationship with the players is pretty good as the players trust his decision and the
