tion structure : (20 mins + 3 reasons + SPAG)

• Firstly, one of the main reasons that there was conflict in the Balkans
was due to the weakness of the Turkish Empire. The Turkish Empire was
made out of many different countries, such as Belgium. However, the
power/strength of the Ottoman Empire decreased as countries began to
want their independence. As the Turkish empire became weaker different
ethnic groups wanted to become independent. The belief of nationalism
was spreading and when Greece won its independence other countries such
as, Serbia were encouraged to leave the Ottoman empire.
• Moreover, another reason for conflict in the balkans was hostility
between Serbia and Austria-Hungary. AH wanted to stop the nationalism
growth. AH annexed Bosnia and were then threatened by Serbias newfound
strength after The Balkan wars (1912-1913). Therefore, AH interfered at
meetings/peace talks to prevent Serbia from gaining any more power/
territory. This further increased tensions in the balkans. AH wanted a
reason to declare war on Serbia and destroy their acquired power.
• Lastly, the most important reason for the conflict in the Balkans was
due to the relationship between Russia and serbia. Austria-Hungary
annexed Bosnia. This angered Serbia, who wanted to unite all Serbs after
gaining their independence. Serbia asked Russia for support. Russia
wanted to have pro-Russian balkans governments so they could secure
access in the Mediterranean for trade. Additionally, many Russians and
Serbs were the same religion meaning that Russia claimed they aided
Serbs on religious reasons. This relationship between Russia and Serbia
further threatened AH, causing tensions.
• In conclusion, the most important reason for conflict in the balkans was
due to the alliance between Russia and Serbia which threatened Russia.
Though, the weakness of the Ottoman Empire was extremely important
because it led to countries becoming independent and the hostility
between Serbia and AH led to tensions/conflict.
