Swiftly walk o'er the western wave, Appeals to Night to spred to itself over the
Spirit of Night! Western sky where the sun sets, essence of
Out of the misty eastern cave, Night, has spirit, imagines night spends daylight
Where, all the long and lone daylight, hours in a misty cave, alone, keeps busy
Thou wovest dreams of joy and fear, manufacturing dreams
Which make thee terrible and dear,— Dreams of joy and fear, humans fear the night,
Swift be thy flight! speaker is in love with Night, believes that night
can act on its own will
Wrap thy form in a mantle gray, Wrap Night in a cloak made of stars
Star-inwrought!
Blind with thine hair the eyes of Day; Day is personified, speaker wants night to spread
Kiss her until she be wearied out, hair over Day’s eyes so that she can no longer
Then wander o'er city, and sea, and land, see and kiss her until she tires and flees, night
Touching all with thine opiate wand— can send all creatures to sleep

When I arose and saw the dawn,
I sighed for thee;
When light rode high, and the dew was gone,
And noon lay heavy on flower and tree,
And the weary Day turned to his rest, When Day was tired, it still stayed on longer,

Thy brother Death came, and cried, Death is brother of Night, Night stands for
Wouldst thou me? darkness, Death takes humans into unknown
