These are some of the key terms used about the Treaty of Versailles. This is some of my GCSE year 10 work about WW1. This is written in bullet points. I Hope you found this helpful.
Term 1 War Guilt Clause – Article 231
- Germany had to except blame for starting the war
- Seen as harsh from the German perspective
- Germany had no voice in their punishment about being responsible for the war
Term 2 – Reparation
- Germany excepted the blame from the allies
- They were forced to pay £6600 million is 1921
- If Germanys Young Plan was not changed, Germany would still be paying for the money
until 1983
- Hated Germany - all evidence pointed that all nations had played a part
- Had to pay total cost war, even though their country economically severed greatly
Term 3 – Territorial loss
- 13% of its German land
- 10% of their Industrial land (16% of its coalfield and ½ of its iron and steel
industry)
- 15% of their agricultural land
- 6 million people across its European and colonial land (12.5% of the population)
- Loss of all colonies
- Hit Germany nationalism and eco – Saar and Upper Silesia particularly important to
eco
- Self-determination – Germany angered countries like Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania
all given self-determination, but 3 million Germany people were now forced to be
part of Cz and Gr speakers in Au could not unify with Gr
- Loss of colonies – very annoying considering Br and Fr gained them! Hypocritical
considering ideas of Self Determination upheld in other parts of Treaty!
