, Introduction
• ovulation and menstruation are cyclic, reproductive
events occurring in sexually mature females which:
- are regulated by:
o follicle–stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone
(LH) from the anterior pituitary gland
o estrogen and progesterone from structures within the ovaries
- occur approx. every 28 days

, Oogenesis
• oogenesis = production of
oocytes (egg cells)
- the oogonia (2n) (stem cells)
divide by mitosis to form two
daughter cells, one of which
develops into a primary
oocyte (2n), which undergoes
meiosis I
- LH stimulates the primary
oocyte to complete meiosis I
just before ovulation (once
puberty is reached) to produce
two haploid cells
- the smaller cell is called a
polar body (can also undergo
meiosis II to form two more
polar bodies)
