P1 task 1 demonstrate accurately the amount of analyte in matrices
In these experiments I was analysing three different matrices and their composition the first
one I started was the concentration of iron in iron tablets which had an approximate
concentration of 14mg but the experiment didn’t work so I was given a set of results from a
different iron tablet which was also 14mg and that worked. (lesson content)

Introduction
Iron tablets

In iron tablets the chemical composition contains magnesium stearate silicon dioxide and
ferrous fumarate which is 33% elemental iron in the one tablet and many other chemicals
are included as well as one tablet containing 14mg of iron. (lesson content)

Bottle water

In bottled volvic water the chemical composition contains calcium, magnesium, sodium, and
potassium. (lesson content)
In bottled Sainsburys water the chemical composition contains sulphate, bicarbonate,
sodium, magnesium, and potassium. (lesson content)

Brass

Brass which is composed/made up of zinc and 60% copper sometimes other brass have very
little types of metal for example tin. (lesson content)

P2 task 2 describe the composition of the matrices analysed
In my iron tablets that I analysed they were made up of ferrous sulphate which is equivalent
to 65mg of the ferrous iron other ingredients include povidone, glucose, magnesium
stearate, lauryl sulphate, titanium dioxide, sucrose, starch, and opaglos. (medicines.org iron
tablets author unknown, 2021)

In the bottled volvic water it is made up of nitrates, chlorides, silica, potassium,
bicarbonates, sodium, magnesium, sulphates, and calcium. (Tesco volvic natural water
mineral composition author unknown, 2021)

, In the Sainsburys British still spring water it is made up of magnesium, calcium, sodium,
potassium, bicarbonate, nitrate, chloride, and sulphate. (lesson content)

M1 task 3 Discuss the measures taken to ensure accuracy in determining the
amount of analyte in the matrices
Method for iron tablets:
1.using the pestle and mortar crush the iron tablets (lesson content)

2.shift the crushed-up tablets to a weighing boat and calculate their collaborate mass this
mass needs to be recorded. (lesson content)

3.from there carry the crushed tablets into a tiny beaker and reanalyse the weighing boat
and same for this step the mass has to also be recorded. (lesson content)

4.put in 100ml of 1.0m sulphuric acid solution into the tiny beaker then mix until all the
tablets have dissolved. (lesson content)

5.filtrate the mixture to a volumetric flask clean out the beaker using more of the sulphuric
acid solution filling it up to the marker then put the lid on and shake it. (lesson content)

6.add 25ml using a pipette into a conical flask. (lesson content)

7.titrate the iron mixture with potassium manganate until mixture has just about turned
pink although the colour will vanish as there is a secondary reaction linking KMnO4 and a
different ingredient In the iron tablet but it has to be made sure no more of the KMnO4 is
used. (lesson content)

8.note down the results. (lesson content)

9.redo the titration until finally concordant results are acquired. (lesson content)
