Diagnostic Radiography personal statement
I have always had the passion and interest to work within the medical related field. I chose
diagnostic radiography because upon closer inspection I found it really interesting to be able
to work with high levels of advanced technology taking images of the inside of patients,
being able to understand the main causes of illnesses as well as working as a team with your
colleagues to come up with different treatment plans.
Another reason why I picked diagnostic radiography is because whenever I went to the
dentist, they would do an X-ray to see if my bite was correct as well as my jaw placement
which helped them to get a better insight to see if any damage was done to my teeth, gums,
and bones that previously was not visible during the routine check-up.
This made my interest in diagnostic radiography grow stronger because not only are you
able to take radiology exams of patients but are also helping to treat injuries and illnesses
this has made revolutionary technology a real success changing the lives of many patients
for the good. Furthermore, using medical imaging will give a clear picture of what’s going on
throughout the patient’s body this will give a better understanding of their condition as well
as predicting any other diseases that could appear in the near future for example cancer.
I think this course would be suitable for me because it requires both teamwork and
communication skills which I am very good at as well as ensuring the safety of patients and
myself. I have been able to demonstrate these skills in class through doing a specific heat
capacity practical with another student one of us calculating the results whilst the other
working with the equipment this helped me to improve my teamwork skills as well as my
communication skills working out calculations together as well as recording temperatures.
I initially came up with the idea to do diagnostic radiography through my applied science
course doing biology learning about disease and infection. Another reason I picked this
course is because I did a practical dissecting a sheep’s heart the purpose of it was to give us
a clear picture of what the human heart might look like on the inside as a human and sheeps
internal anatomy are very similar which made me want to go on to study further into the
human body as the course goes into depth of all the main causes of illnesses in the body as
well as the job being really hands on. There is also a high demand for radiographers
additionally it has many areas I can choose to specialise from which makes it a very flexible
job.
After my degree at university, I’m planning to go on and do masters specialising in one of
the areas in diagnostic radiography getting a stronger understanding of where diseases
originate from within the body and making up different treatment plans because diagnostic
radiography will become important in the future hence why it’s in demand today.
