 The river overflows every August
 The water leaves fertile silt on the rivers banks
 During this time: farmers cannot work on their lands
 When the water recedes: they can grow grain, grass and vegetables
 Due to the high evaporation rate, they have to use irrigation farming

 The Nile farmers became an agrarian society – they started to live in villages
 When harvest grew – villages turned into cities and the Nile region became an
urban agrarian society
 Assignment: Explain how the following words are a consequence of this
development

 The pharaoh was an autocrat: he decided everything and had all the power in Egypt
 He appointed viziers – servants/advisers
