IMPORTANT

HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL

This is a very big manual and can be quite overwhelming to get to the desired assignment. The

actual A+ samples are bold and highlighted in yellow e.g., BUS 5113 Discussion Assignment Unit

1 – Sample 1. If you are in a hurry and have no interest in the Learning Guides, look out for these

headings. Assignments are in chronological order from Unit 1 to Unit 8 in the order of Discussion

Assignment, Written Assignment, and Portfolio Activity. The Group Activity is at the very end.

Links are also being worked on at the moment but for now, it is better to search for the desired

assignment manually. If you are using Microsoft Word, use the search or find (in order versions)

function. Input the desired assignments in this format “BUS 5113 Discussion Assignment Unit 1”.

A navigation bar opens on the left and you’ll see all the 5 alternative assignments – just click on

the desired one. Adobe reader also has a similar search method “Find”; it will display results

similarly.

Enjoy!

Introduction

Welcome to Unit 1, Organizational Theory & Behavior. This Unit will focus on the question of

“What is Organizational Theory & Behavior?”

The short answer is, the field of Organizational Theory & Behavior is about understanding how

people and groups within an organization behave, react and interpret events. Now, let’s explore

what makes that happen.

If you haven't done so yet, go to the Course Forum and respond to the thread created for

introductions.

Introduce yourself to your classmates, including some of the following information:

 Basics: Name, where are you from, family, community activities?

 Undergraduate education?

 Career progression thus far?

 Why MBA?

/

, University of the People –MBA COMPLETE GUIDE

 Career Aspirations?

 How do you believe that studying Organizational Theory and Behavior will help you to be

more successful in the future?

Reading Assignment

Discussion Assignment

In the discussion forum you are expected to participate often and engage in deep levels of

discourse. Please post your initial response as early as possible and continue to participate

throughout the unit. You are required to post an initial response to the question/issue presented in

the Forum and then respond to at least 3 of your classmates’ initial posts. You should also respond

to anyone who has responded to you.

In our readings it suggests that individuals tend to change their behavior if they believe they are

being observed-this is called the Hawthorne Effect. As Organizational Leaders what does this

phenomenon tell you about observed behaviors and those you may not see? How does this impact

the broader context of an organization, particularly when trying to gather authentic data on

organizational behavior?

Written Assignment

Submit a paper which is 2-3 pages in length (no more than 3-pages), exclusive of the reference

page. Paper should be double spaced in Times New Roman font (or its equivalent) which is no

greater than 12 points in size. The paper should cite at least two sources in APA format. One

source can be your textbook.

In Chapter 2 of the Organizational Theory text we reviewed four theoretical contributions which

are central to the understanding of today's Organizations. Offer a brief analysis of all four

theoretical concepts and then pick the one you the feel is the most influential from both historical

and managerial perspectives. Explain. Now, consider how these concepts impacted the

development of the current organizational theories.

Be sure to use APA formatting in your paper. Purdue University’s Online Writing LAB (OWL) is

a free website that provides excellent information and resources for understanding and using the

APA format and style. The OWL website can be accessed here:

BUS 5113 Discussion Assignment Unit 1 – Sample 1

Is understood that the relevance of the studies conducted by Elton Mayo and Fritz Roethlisberger

is transcendental, they prompted growth in studies about workplace psychology to this day and

therefore the Hawthorne studies are quite relevant given that increasing the productivity of the

employee's performance is always desired, and that the quest for the psychological Grail of

employee motivation has been applied to modern day practices that follow not only those of the

Hawthorne studies but also others parting from Frederick Herzberg to the Gallup

Organization(DeKay, 2013).

/

, University of the People –MBA COMPLETE GUIDE

On one hand there were too many variables, and there was no consensus among researchers which

led to a point where findings showed achievement and recognition opposed over salary and

supervision (DeKay,2013). On the other hand,

The Hawthorne studies showed the people's work performance is dependent on social issues and

job satisfaction, and that monetary incentives and good working conditions are generally less

important in improving employee productivity then meeting individuals’ need and desire to belong

to a group and be included in decision-making at work.(The Human Side: Hawthorne, n.d.)

Modern day management depends a lot on how developed countries are, in developed countries

and some overseas companies that operate in underdeveloped countries it is observed how

managers apply the concepts and their variables learned from the studies to increase

productivity. However, in underdeveloped countries where there is a higher level of poverty and

dissatisfaction among general society, management still operates with the principal of fear and

punishment under the assumption that workers need money, and they will obey and produce under

close supervision that threatens the possibility to lose their job, but the fact is that by assuring a

friendly environment for employees as well as meeting individuals' needs, acknowledging and

empowering employees higher productivity could be achieved as shown during the Hawthorne

studies.
