P5-Describe how anti-discriminatory practice is promoted health and social
care settings.
Staff training
Anti discriminatory practice can be promoted in health and social care settings by
making certain that all staff members within the setting have been trained
thoroughly. The training sessions must be convenient for everyone and must be
outside of working hours. Training staff on anti discriminatory practice will make them
more confident in their approach with the service users as they will have a full
understanding on all aspects of anti discriminatory practice. For instance, they would
have learnt the importance of anti discriminatory practice, the ways that it can be
applied to their workplace, how to overcome discrimination and lastly the
consequences if they do not comply with anti discriminatory practice. Throughout the
training session all care providers will have the opportunity to write notes and pose
any questions they may have to ensure they have a full understanding of what is
expected of them. Within a health and social care setting if a care provider has not
received training on anti discriminatory practice they may not realise if they are being
discriminatory for example a care provider may label any Asian individual as being
“Chinese” when in fact they may be from other parts of Asia for instance Japan or
Nepal. For this reason, ensuring all staff members receive thorough training will
mean they will have more knowledge and a better understanding of how to promote
anti discriminatory practice so scenarios like this do not happen.
Inspector manager
Another useful way to promote anti discriminatory practice could be by employing an
Inspector Manager who would assess the way that care providers carry out anti
discriminatory practice. An Inspection Manager would be particularly beneficial if an
incident related to discrimination has taken place between a care provider and
service user as the Inspector Manager would be able to carefully monitor the way the
care provider treats the service users and how they follow the polices and
procedures that the government have implemented. The Inspection Manager would

also make sure that the care providers are treating each of the service users fairly
and that human rights, equality and diversity are considered. If the Inspection
Manager notices that a particular care provider is not promoting anti discriminatory
practice they should report it to the line manager.
Hiring diverse staff
Hiring diverse staff will promote anti discriminatory practice. This is because they will
learn about other people's cultures, beliefs and values so they will know how to avoid
discrimination. If an organisation employs staff members from a range of ethnicities it
will demonstrate anti discriminatory practice because the organisation is open to
everyone regardless of their race or ethnicity. Within a health and social care setting
it is usually very effective to know other languages apart from English. This promotes
anti discriminatory practice because if a foreign person comes to the UK and they
don’t know much English the care provider within the setting will be able to help them
with the language barrier.
Providing active support consistent with the beliefs, culture and preference of
the individual
Active support will promote anti discriminatory practice. This is because it ensures
that service users beliefs, culture and preferences are considered. For instance in a
residential care home there may be some muslim service users who require halal
meat. This must be made available for them. If it is not possible vegetarian options
must be provided. Muslims also pray five times a day so there should be a space
allocated for them so that they are able to pray. This promotes anti discriminatory
practice by respecting and valuing the difference.
Person centered approach
A residential care home can use a person centered approach to promote anti
discriminatory practice. A person centered approach focuses on that specific
