We are reviewing the health and safety policy for (SCIENTIFIC ORGNAIZATION) inside the
teaching laboratories and the health and safety for (SCIENTIFIC ORGANIZATION) inside the
research laboratories.
FIRST SCIENTIFIC ORGANIZATION 3 hazards:
- The main activity that takes place in a school laboratory is to practice research by
carrying out investigations in the fields of biology, chemistry and physics. In these
investigations often involves the use of equipment such as glassware, naked lights as
Bunsen burners and toxic substances that are corrosive or biological substances that
could cause irritations in case of an accident. Because of this, using chemicals such as
HCl acid, which is a concentrated and corrosive solution, used regularly in practicals,
can be classified as a hazard because it can affect the body’s skin when exposed
which can lead to irritations if touched, or inflammations on the inside if it was
inhaled. The college states that appropriate clothes such as lab coats should always
be worn during an investigation and also advises all staff and students to follow a risk
assesment before carrying an investigation.
- Using naked lights as in the case of a Bunsen burner is an activity that takes place
within a scientific laboratory. The hazard involved in that specific activity is that
clothes of individuals could catch fire, additionally any flammable substances that
are included could catch fire during the activity, especially when working with
atmospheric substances such as oxygen, this can immediately react and as a result it
can cause harmful events. The college advises that all staff should be trained in cases
of emergency.
- Because students are working with toxic substances in order to carry out
investigations, these substances are used frequently by students and teaching staff
throughout the chemistry practical investigations and therefore they are classified as
hazards because it can cause direct harm or future damages as working with
flammable substances such as ethanol that are kept under compression or a source
of fire , could cause explosions, meaning that the substances will be available to be
inhaled if exposed or cause skin contact. As a result, the environment should be
protected at all time, kept away from danger as well as students by ensuring that
potential accidents that can cause upcoming complications are reported as well as
the accidents that have already happened should be reported and therefore a risk
assessment should be created before any activity takes place following the CLEAPSS
regulation. Staff and students should be provided with personal protective
equipment (PPE) which includes wearing of glasses, gloves, lab coats in order to
minimise the potential risks and damages in general.
- In a laboratory, students also might work with electrical heavy equipment. For
example they might construct an electrical circuit, which involves using cables, wires,
batteries that generates current and any electrical components. In this situation a
hazard such as electric socks and burns should be taken under consideration because
it can affect the workers. However, the college usually uses batteries that carry small
amounts of voltage meaning that students or staff are not put in danger.
