W1 T2; Harms associated with drug use
Environmental risk Adolescence
Initiation typically happens during adolescence; experimentation is normal
Minority escalates to frequent problematic drug use
Peak period for onset and dependence; therefore addiction
Adolescent brain sensitive to drugs
Animal research:
o Shows lower sensitivity in adolescents to aversive effects of being drunk,
sedation, hangover and ataxia
o Increased sensitivity to social facilitation and spatial memory disruption
o However, problematic to extrapolate animal studies and only looks at alcohol
A cause is not the only cause and is not necessary/sufficient for addiction
A cause is an event that increases probability of risk e.g. smoking increases prob of
lung cancer
Risk factors
Old review by Hawkins et al, 1992, categorised risk factors
Summarised above categories; perhaps need to be reassessed and updated
Effect of risk factors is independent of potential confounding covariates
Longitudinal/prospective and twin/adoption research useful in studying these
Increases accuracy of timing of risk events and can assess many covarities
